McKeesport council officially renamed the dek hockey rink in Renziehausen Park after fallen police Officer Sean Sluganski with the unanimous approval of a bill at Wednesday’s meeting.
This comes a day after the city held a memorial and dedication service in honor of Sluganski on the one-year anniversary of his tragic death.
Mayor Michael Cherepko explained that the city wanted to hold the dedication ceremony prior to authorizing the renaming of the Renzie Park facility to the Officer Sean “Slug” Sluganski Memorial Dek Hockey Rink.
Cherepko said Tuesday’s memorial became “emotional” when Sluganski’s family arrived.
“I had it all under control until his family got there,” he said.
Cherepko added that Sluganski’s family was appreciative of the memorial and dedication service.
“They were very, very happy, very grateful,” he said.
Cherepko commended the community for backing the McKeesport police after Sluganski’s death.
