Harold C. ‘Hal’ Davies – Charleroi

Harold C. “Hal” Davies, 92, formerly of Charleroi, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, as a resident of Windsor Medical Center in North Canton, Ohio. Mr. Davies died from complications of vascular dementia. He was born on June 15, 1931, the only son of Clyde and Ruth Davies of Charleroi. His paternal grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Albert H. Davies, emigrated to the U.S. from Wales, U.K., in the late 1800s and served in several United Methodist Church parishes south of Pittsburgh, including Mt. Pleasant. His maternal great-grandparents and their children immigrated to the U.S. from Gersweiler, Germany, also in the late 1800s, and settled in the Charleroi area. In addition to the above, Mr. Davies was preceded in death by an infant sister; an infant son, Scott C. Davies; and his loving wife of 55 years, Elizabeth A. Suter Davies. He is survived by his children, Janet (Geoffrey) Bishop of North Canton, Ohio, Jeffrey Davies of Fayette City, and James (Heather) Davies of Donora; his grandchildren, Jonathan (Grace) Bishop of North Canton, Ohio, Ethan (Jenna) Bishop of Cincinnati, Ohio, Benjamin (Rachel) Bishop of Columbus, Ohio, Alexis (Joseph) Alllcock of Rustburg, Va., Ashley Davies of Lynchburg, Va., Cole Davies of Fayette City, Pa., and Maxwell Davies of Greensburg, Pa.; and his great-grandchildren, Nora Bishop, Brody Bishop, Kade Bishop, Pierce Bishop and Rhett Allcock. He also leaves behind many loving brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins as his wife was one of 13 children. Harold was a graduate of Charleroi High School, Class of 1949, and the University of Pittsburgh in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He was a member of the R.O.T.C. program at Pitt and eventually served two years active duty as a first lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War and as a reserve officer for six years after the war. He was particularly proud of the bridge kits that his unit devised that enabled forward progression of the U.S. troops during the war. Mr. Davies’ resumed employment with the Pittsburgh Regional Sales Office of Ford Motor Company after the war, where he was employed until being promoted in 1965 to the Dearborn, Mich., headquarters. Harold chose to resign from FMC in 1966 to become an auto dealer with his cousin, Barry Tregembo, briefly with Dodge, changing to a Ford dealership in 1970. Davies and Tregembo Ford operated in Charleroi for many years and became Davies Ford Inc. in the early 1990s with Harold Davies as CEO. Upon Mr. Davies’ retirement, the dealership has continued, operated by his family. Harold and his wife, Elizabeth, were tireless supporters of the small business community in Charleroi, and the greater Mon Valley. Mr. Davies gave his time and treasure to many local organizations and charities. He was especially proud of his 50-plus-year membership in the Charleroi Lions Club and its volunteer activities, the Mon Valley Chamber of Commerce, Mon Valley Vo-Tech, Mon Valley Progress Council and the Mon Valley YMCA expansion committee. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 22 in Charleroi and a Golden Panther, enthusiastically supporting the athletic programs at the University of Pittsburgh. He and his wife attended many home and away Pitt basketball and football games. Friends will be received at HOGAN-MELENYZER FUNERAL HOME, 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, from 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2024. A celebration of Harold’s life will be held at Journey by Grace Church, 4803 State Route 51 North, Rostraver Township, at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024. At the conclusion of the service, a continued celebration of Mr. Davies’ life will be held inside the church. Interment will follow later that day in the Monongahela Cemetery with full military rites.
