With the aid of a few forfeits and some aggressive wrestling in contested matches, the Belle Vernon Area wrestling team picked up a 42-28 dual win over rival Elizabeth Forward Wednesday.
The Leopards fell behind a little early thanks to some early wins by the Warriors’ Vincent Goots to start the match off at 127 pounds.
Goots fell behind the Leopards’ Nischal Dihal 6-5 after the opening two minutes and was down 8-5 early in the second.
Goots got a takedown to cut the lead down to one before pinning Nihal in 3:12.
In the next contested bout at 139, EF’s Lucas Boyer earned a 16-6 major decision over BVA’s Gio Weightman.
“I definitely don’t think we wrestled our best tonight, it shows there’s still some work to do,” BVA coach Bob Bove said. “The match at 139, I don’t think Gio wrestled his best, but that’s a matchup of two of the top wrestlers in the section at that weight.
“And in the opener, we can’t lose matches that we’re winning. If we jump out to leads in the matches, we need to see them through and get those points.”
