Dr. Jaroslav V. Vaverka, 80, of West Mifflin, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024. Born in Chomutov, Czechoslovakia, on Nov. 2, 1943, he was the son of the late Vladimir Buchta and Vera Skalska. Jaroslav immigrated to the United States in 1969. He was an engineer in the mine and was also a weightlifter prior to becoming a professor of applied engineering at the former California University of Pennsylvania. He had a passion for history and collected books, foreign films and coins. He is survived by his wife, Donna (Bowes) Vaverka; daughters, Miriam Rice, Andrea (Mark) Heinrich, Nicole (Matthew) Weightman and Elissa (Michael) Caprini; grandchildren, Emma, Ally, Ashley, Olivia, Theo, Natalie, Grace, John and Lily; and sisters, Jitka (Zdenek) Demkova and Hana (Petr) Krivka. Friends will be received from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at JAMES C. STUMP FUNERAL HOME INC., 580 Circle Drive, Rostraver Township, 724-929-7934, www.jamesstumpfuneralhome.com, where a funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. with Pastor Sandra E. Fitzgibbons officiating.
