Lebkuchen cookies are a sweet reminder of Christmases past
By Jim Busch
For the MVI
Lebkuchen are one of the most popular Christmas treats in Germany. Lebkuchen are the antidote to overly sweet Christmas cookies. They have a spicy, complex flavor that will be a hit with anyone who enjoys gingerbread and spice cake. They also hold a special place in my family’s story. As a high school freshman in 1967, I decided to take German as my language elective. This choice was based on my family heritage, as my paternal grandparents emigrated from Germany in the late 19th century. I never knew them, they passed away long before I was born, and my dad never learned to speak German as his parents wanted their children to be 100% Americans.
