Gerald Allan Mitchell, 91, of Elco, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Granville, Pa., on Jan. 14, 1932, the son of William Brewer and Phyllis Dietz. Gerald was retired from the former Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in Allenport. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Gerald coached the 5 Town Sterlings, played semi pro football for the Southside Merchants and played on the 1949 undefeated season of the California Trojans. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 801 in Roscoe. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Jean Kent Mitchell; five daughters, Geraldine “Dee” (John) Mavrovich of Roscoe, Debbie (Michael) Anderson of Belle Vernon, Christine (Barry) Jones of Roscoe, Lora (Ronald) Wozniak of Elco and Teri Mitchell of Elco; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Gerald was preceded in death by three brothers, Eddie Mitchell, George “Bud” Brewer and John Brewer; three sisters, Caroline “Hope” Brewer, Francis Wahl and Ruth Richardson; and two great-grandchildren, Dakota Karol and Dominic Norelli. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, at MELENYZER FUNERAL HOMES & CREMATION SERVICES INC., 1008 Furlong Ave., Roscoe, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023. Interment will follow at Howe Cemetery Long Branch with military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
