Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Slosky – formerly of California, Pa.
Elizabeth “Libby” Slosky, 98, formerly of California, Pa., passed away on Nov. 18, 2023, in Traverse City, Mich. Libby was born on Oct. 15, 1925, to Mary Sopsic and John Jarsulic in Fairhope. She graduated from Marion High School in 1943. While working at a grocery store in Monessen, Libby was encouraged by a customer to join the ranks of Rosie the Riveter at U.S. Steel’s Irwin Works in West Mifflin, where she worked through the end of World War II as a quality control inspector for rolled steel used in airplanes. She was very proud of her contributions to the war effort and made several lifelong friends through that work. She met her husband, Bill, while he was working as a lifeguard at Redd’s Beach. They married in 1952 and lived over the years in Greensburg, Long Island, N.Y., and in California, Pa. Libby was the consummate homemaker and flower gardener. She was also a lifelong runner who jogged at Cal U’s Adamson Stadium and the California Rotary Park well into her late 80s (always in a color-coordinated athletic outfit, of course). Even in her last years in assisted living, she lamented that she had become lazy because other people were cooking and cleaning for her. Libby’s sunny disposition will be forever remembered by her son, Col. Ed Slosky (USAF Ret.) (Nick); her dear cousin, Betty; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Bill; sisters, Margie, Katie, Jo; and brother, Chuck. A celebration of Libby’s life is planned for spring 2024.
