Nancy Layton – Monessen

By obits

Nancy Layton of Monessen, beloved daughter of the late Iva Mae and Thomas Steer and wife to the late Gary Layton, passed away peacefully at Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital on Nov. 18, 2023. Nancy is survived by her sister, Betty Jean Zenobi; Nancy’s children, Michelle Dudeck and Scott Layton; as well as her nieces, nephews and their families. Nancy was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Allen; her son, Gary Ray Jr.; brother-in-law, Dominic Zenobi; and her great-nephew, Mark Zenobi. Nancy was a survivor of a car accident that killed her husband in 1983, paralyzed her and left its mark on her life ever since. Not expected to survive the accident, she woke from her three-month coma and fought back to gain her independence and limited mobility, all while raising two young children and taking courses for her university degree as a non-traditional student at PennWest California. She thrived, she loved and persevered to the end. She died with a smile on her face, knowing that she was with Jesus. She was the strongest person that her family and friends knew, and she never let adversity get in the way of her compassion. She always had a smile for everyone she met and was open and respectful to all, a lesson we should all strive for. She will be missed by everyone who has ever met her. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, at RHOME FUNERAL HOME INC., Monessen. Interment to follow at the West Newton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that any donations be made in her memory to Animal Friends of Pittsburgh.
