Albert Louis Protin, 86, of Charleroi, passed away peacefully on Aug. 16, 2023. Born in Charleroi on Aug. 27, 1936, Al was the son of the late Louis and Rose Savarno Protin. Al graduated from Charleroi High School as a member of the Class of 1954 and remained a lifelong Cougars fan. He served his country honorably in the United States Army at Fort Knox and later continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He was known as “Pap” to his many grandchildren. Al was a member of Saint Andrew the Apostle – Charleroi site, the Charleroi Knights of Columbus, the Charleroi Belgium Club and a longtime member of the Elks. Al enjoyed his many trips to Disney World, his collection of Disney memorabilia, sharing his love of model trains with his grandsons, rooting for the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins, and telling tales of his adventures to anyone willing to listen. In his later years, Al enjoyed participating in the many activities held at the Bethel Square Senior Apartments. Surviving to cherish Al’s memory are his daughters, Rebecca Protin, Luanne (Ron) Campana and Susie (Jay) Hernishin; his son, Jim (Trish) Protin; his grandchildren, Nicole Campana, Dominic (Amanda) Campana, Brian (Jessica) Campana, Katy (Christopher) Mitchell, AJ Protin, Abby Protin, Willow Hernishin and Cooper Hernishin; his 1-year-old great-grandchildren, Charlotte Campana, Zachary Mitchell and Nora Campana; his sister-in-law, Canice Dolan; his cousin, Edward Savarno; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Louis and Rose, Al was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen Dolan Protin. Friends and family will be received at HOGAN MELENYZER FUNERAL HOME at 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, PA 15022, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023, at Saint Andrew the Apostle – Charleroi site, 624 Washington Ave. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monongahela. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Eileen Protin Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o CASDEF, P.O. Box 382, Charleroi, PA 15022.
