Walter M. Smith Jr., 78, of Charleroi, died Monday, July 3, 2023, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 18, 1944, in Pittsburgh, son of Walter M. and Georgina Hat-ton Smith Sr. Walt was a graduate of Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, W.Va. From 1962-65, he served in the U.S. Army where he was a military truck driver. Walt was very dedicated to the racing of #3 Modified race car known as the “Nuclear Banana.” His passion for racing encompassed over 40 years at Motordrome and Jennerstown Speedways, as well as other local tracks. You could always find Walt, Matt and Joe spending their time working in the garage. He is survived by his daughter, Robin Lee Davis and his son, Matthew M. Smith, both of Charleroi; grandson, Joseph M. School and fiancée, Crystal Barnhart of Yukon; two great-grandchildren, Colson M. and Emalyn S. Smith; sister, Janis Smith of Safety Harbor, Fla.; and brother, Alan Smith and wife Lisa of Raleigh, N.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Fawcett Smith, who died Sept. 2, 2020. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Thomas DeGregory and Promedica Hospice. A private memorial service will be held to celebrate Walt’s life.
