Pennsylvania’s state Senate passed legislation Tuesday sponsored by three Senators, including Sen. Camera Bartolotta, R-Carroll Township, that is designed to reduce the amount of people on probation and in jail by limiting the length of probation and preventing people from returning to jail for minor violations.
Senate Bill 838, which will now go to the House of Representatives after passing in a 45-4 vote, is also sponsored by Sens. Lisa Baker, R- Luzerne/Pike/Susquehanna/Wayne/Wyoming, and Anthony Williams, D-Philadelphia. Two similar Senate bills have previously failed to pass in Republican-controlled legislatures, but the House is currently controlled by Democrats and the bill’s sponsors are hopeful that things will be different this time around.
