Angela Rettura Scalzo – Monessen

By obits

Taken from us too soon was Angela Rettura Scalzo, of Monessen, who passed unexpectedly on June 19, 2023, in Penn Highlands Hospital. Angela was the daughter of her loving parents, the late Giuseppe Rettura and Giuseppina Caruso Rettura. She was born in Nicastro, Italy, on Jan. 23, 1948. She arrived in New York on Aug. 16, 1952, at the age of 4 on a ship named Vulcania, accompanied by her parents and brother, Guy, and lived in Monessen with her grandparents, who had immigrated earlier. She completed her education at Monessen High School in 1966 and became the secretary for Jefferson Elementary School. Subsequently, she went on to further her career in school administration at Monessen Catholic School, where she found great joy for many years. In 1971, at the age of 23, she returned to visit family in Italy, where she met her future husband and love of her life, Vincent Scalzo. They married on Jan. 8, 1972, and began their life together. Angela was also a beloved member of the Annita Garabaldi Society in Belle Vernon. She cherished her Italian roots and was passionate about educating her children and grandchildren about their heritage. She will always be remembered for her passion for cooking, baking and sharing traditional family foods passed down through many generations. She continued the tradition of gathering with family every Sunday, welcoming and enjoying the company of all that arrived at her door. She lived by the words: “La Famiglia è Tutto!” Her true joy and happiness came from spending time with her four grandchildren. Her smile would beam and her eyes would light up each time she embraced them. Enjoying every moment, she loved telling stories, singing songs and playing games. She was also an excellent listener and always had encouraging words to share. She was the most loving Nanna, and her grandchildren were the light of her life. Angela is survived by her best friend and loving husband of 51 years, Vincent Scalzo Sr.; daughter, Laura Scalzo-Amprim of Belle Vernon; son and daughter-in-law, Vincent (Jennifer) Scalzo Jr. of Bethel Park; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Guy (Cecilia) Rettura of Bethel Park, Lou (Betsy) Rettura of Bethel Park and Joseph (Joyce) Rettura of Armbrust, Pa.; four grandchildren, Haley Amprim and Thomas, Joseph and Vincent E. Scalzo; three nieces, Christina (Chad) Headley, Rachel (Rock) Grattan and Alyse Rettura; three nephews, Brian Rettura, Brett (Katherine) Rettura and J.J. Rettura; three great-nieces, Alyssa, Gulianna and Madison; and a great-nephew, Rocky. At Angela’s request, services were private. MARSHALL MARRA FUNERAL HOME, 216 Chess St., Monongahela, 724-258-6767, was in charge of the arrangements. Condolences can be shared online at marshallmarrafuneralhome.com.
