Community residents will be able to take a seat thanks to a project by the White Oak Lions Club.
The White Oak Lions recently dedicated two benches made from recycled plastic to the Heritage Hill pool and Carnegie Library White Oak branch.
The donations are the result of a three-year club project, wherein members collected thousands of plastic bags and donated them to be remade into wood-alternative materials.
The group utilized Giant Eagle’s partnership with Trex Company Inc., a manufacturer of composite decking, railing and other outdoor items made from recycled materials.
The company hosts a sponsorship program for community groups — if they collect a certain amount of plastic within a set period of time, the groups can receive a composite bench.
“We started the project in March 2020,” club President Carol Lasch said. “For each bench, we had to collect 500 pounds of plastic in a six month period. Don’t even ask me how many bags that is — I have no clue.”
