John P. ‘Duffy’ Carlisle – Sterling, Va., formerly of Stockdale

John P. “Duffy” Carlisle, of Sterling, Va., formerly of Stockdale, passed away on April 27, 2023, at the age of 84. Born on Oct. 27, 1938, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of the late Julia and Gus Carlisle. He graduated in 1957 from Charleroi High School, where he competed in wrestling. He joined the military, where he served in the U.S. Army, serving tours in Germany and Korea. After an honorable discharge in 1966, he settled in New Jersey, where he worked for the United States Post Office. That is also where he met his wife, the former Eleanor Medejko; they were married on May 1, 1998. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; sister, Patricia Carlisle; brother, Pat Carlisle; niece, Jill Carlisle; great- nephew, Patrick Perkins; and great-nephew, Stephen Woodard. He is survived by his sister, Laura (Carlisle) Zuraw of Ashburn, Va.; nephew, Edward Zuraw Jr. of Winchester, Va.; nieces, Lisa Zuraw of Ashburn, Va., PJ Woodard of Richmond, Va., and Marcia Flanagan of Fredericksburg, Va.; great-nieces, Julia Fritz and Mary Beth Bowling; and great-nephew, Scott Perkins. He was an avid history buff and frequently in conversation would quote many military generals. He was a very kind soul and will be missed by all. Burial will take place in the family plot at the Scenery Hill Cemetery.
