Marie Elizabeth Watkins Johnson was 92 years old. She departed this life June 1, 2023, at the Concordia Nursing facility in Monroeville, where she had been a resident for over one year. Prior to that, Marie had resided for most of her life in Monessen. Marie was born Nov. 13, 1930, to the late Raymond Watkins and Esther Watkins Burkes in Belle Vernon. Marie had been a lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church and was a regular attendee until her health declined. Marie loved her family, her Lord, her church and her church family. She served many roles in the church including deaconess, trustee, church secretary, kitchen coordinator and numerous other responsibilities. Marie worked and retired from Charland clothing factory in Lock 4, Pa., where she proudly worked in the cutting room. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Leon “Pappy” Johnson Sr., in 2008; a brother, Raymond “Pete” Watkins, circa 1949; a sister, Urella M. Chatman in 1999; a son, Raymond H. Johnson, in 1991; a son, Leon V. Johnson Jr., in 2010; and a granddaughter, Erica Johnson, in 2017. Surviving are her brother, David Burkes; three granddaughters, Lisa Cotton, Raynetta Johnson and Aneisha Johnson; a grandson, Maj. William Johnson (Ret. Air Force); daughter-in-law, Jackie Johnson Fields; niece, Patricia Booker; nephew, Geane Chatman; a cousin, Billie Hill-Greene; 17 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members and friends. Family and friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at Antioch Baptist Church, Belle Vernon, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2023.
