Authorities could temporarily seize firearms and background checks would be expanded for gun buyers, under two bills passed Monday in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
The Democratic majority that pushed the measures through describes the proposals as relatively moderate measures to cut down on gun trafficking, suicide deaths, accidental shootings and day-to-day violence.
Local Republican state Representatives describe the bills as attempts to restrict access to firearms, access that is protected by the state and national constitutions.State Rep. Eric Davanzo, R-Smithton, and State Rep. Bud Cook, R-West Pike Run Township, both pointed to mental health as the key to getting control over gun violence.
