Lillian ‘Lil’ Mary Kurtz Matheson – California, Pa.
Lillian “Lil” Mary Kurtz Matheson, 89, of California, Pa., passed away peacefully Sunday, May 14, 2023, with her loving family by her side. She was born on Wednesday, July 12, 1933, in Coal Center, a daughter of the late Mary Kander Kurtz and Michael Kurtz. Lil was a graduate of California High School and went on to earn an associate degree in business. She worked at The William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh as an executive secretary. Afterwards, she worked in retail in various shoe stores. She later retired in 1989 from working at Miller’s Department store in Charleroi. She cherished time with her two granddaughters where they would have fun singing, dancing, and playing games together. Lil was a member of a card club for 40 years playing “500 Bid” with her lady friends. She was also a member of a bowling league for many years. Lil enjoyed going to casinos where she played blackjack, three card poker and slots. She loved getting away on her “mini vacations” to her daughter Lori’s house. Once spring came, Lil was found outside with her husband gardening and planting flowers. Most importantly, she loved cooking and baking big dinners for her family. Lil was preceded in death by her husband, James “Red” Matheson and her beloved daughter Lori Matheson DeRosa. Also, two sons-in-law, Justin J. Kuvinka and Frank T. DeRosa. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Sheryl Matheson and son-in-law Kenny Baird and Terri Kuvinka, all of California; two granddaughters, Tara Dieteman and husband Michael of West Newton and Kala Kuvinka of California; several cousins; her special friend, Cindy; and her best pup, Noel. Lil will be remembered as loving, carefree, generous and compassionate. She will be loved and missed dearly by her family and all who knew her. Family and friends will be received at MARISCOTTI FUNERAL HOME INC., Anthony N. Mariscotti, supervisor, 323 Fourth St., California, Pa., from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2023.
