Jack L Young – Shepherdstown, W.Va.

By obits

Jack L Young, 88, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 4, 2023. Jack was born on June 9, 1934, in Fayette City, a small town near Pittsburgh that he loved all his life. He graduated from California University of Pennsylvania, where he met his beloved wife, Martha. He joined the Navy through Officer Candidate School and served in the Navy for 24 years, retiring in 1980 as a captain in the Supply Corps. In 1980, Jack embarked on a second career in the private sector, spending 16 years as a management consultant with CACI in Rosslyn, Va., outside Washington, D.C. He retired from CACI in 1996 as senior vice president. From 1996 until 2011, he undertook his third career with Ruehlin Associates, counseling retiring military members transitioning to the private sector. In 1999, Jack and Martha began their favorite adventure, moving to Shepherdstown, W.Va. – which they called their “Shangri La.” They built a lovely home in Cress Creek, near their son Richard and his wife, Kelly Young, and soon-to-be grandson Mason. They loved the “small town life” and became active in their new community. They joined Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church. They mentored young people in the First In Your Family program. They were instrumental in the implementation of the Lifelong Learning Program at Shepherd University. Jack was on the founding board of SAIL — Shepherdstown Area Independent Living, a “Village Caring” program providing support and socialization to community members, allowing them to remain in their homes as they age. Both Lifelong Learning and SAIL thrive today. After Martha’s passing in 2018, Jack continued to contribute and care for members of his Shepherdstown community, his friends and family members. He made the world’s best applesauce, which he shared generously. He will be sorely missed, but will live on in the connections and contributions he made all of his life. Jack is survived by his children and their spouses, Elizabeth Young and Dan Pickard, Richard and Kelly Young, and Jack and Carol Young; grandchildren, Mason Young, Jack Young and Loren Pickard; sister-in-law, Lois Hlavac; and a host of relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Kridle Young, in 2018; his parents, Clarence W. Young and Lois S. Young; his brother, Bob L. Young; and sister-in-law, Yvonne Young. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests supporting Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430, SAIL, P.O. Box 2091 Shepherdstown, WV 25443, and Shepherdstown Library, P.O. Box 278, Shepherdstown, WV 25443. With deepest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude, the family of Jack Young thanks you for your presence, prayers, support and kindness. A tribute to Jack’s life will be arranged by his family to be held in early summer. There will be applesauce. Arrangements are by MELVIN T. STRIDER COLONIAL FUNERAL HOME, Ranson, WV.
