Go Greyhounds — team to travel on charter bus

After a surge of media attention Tuesday, the Monessen girls basketball team will travel to the PIAA playoffs in a charter bus paid for by the school. Word got out on Facebook Monday night that the Greyhounds would ride to Otto-Eldred School District for Saturday’s game on a standard school bus — an uncomfortable 400-mile round trip. Boosters began rallying support from the region to raise money for the team. Word spread to local radio, television and Twitter, prompting donations from all over, and many Greyhound alumni joined the cause. Word spread to the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, and Executive Director Jim Britt called Monessen athletic director Gina Naccarato Tuesday morning, offering to pay for the trip.
