Les “Hooty” Pemberton, 64, of Monongahela, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his wife, daughter and brother-in-law. Hooty was a 1977 graduate of Ringgold High School and a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Monongahela. He was employed by the City of Monongahela for 35 years, working with the Monongahela Street Department and as code enforcement officer for the city. Hooty was a lifetime member, assistant chief and secretary for the New Eagle Volunteer Fire Department. He was vice president of the Monongahela Donora Area Lions Club, where he was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for his dedicated humanitarian services. Hooty also enjoyed playing the mascot, Leo the Lion. He received a certificate of commendation from the Washington County Board of Commissioners for his courage and compassion during the catastrophic events of Hurricane Ivan. Hooty always assisted those in need and dedicated his life to helping his community. He and his wife, Dorothea, enjoyed taking trips with Amber and Ben Crawford and camping with his family. He especially loved going to Virginia Beach and visiting the Pocahontas Pancake and Waffle Stop. Hooty is survived by his wife of 32 WONDERFUL years, Dorothea Knight Pemberton; daughter, Shelby (Matthew) Gwynn; daughter-in-law, Megan Pemberton; granddaughter, Camille Rose; mother-in-law, Mary Lou Knight; brothers-in-law, Lance (Jana) Knight and Glenn (Renate) Knight; nieces, Natalie (Ryan) Pro Waggoner, Sarah Capatoni (Joe Spiker), Grace and Travis Weston, Joshua Haywood and Kadence Crawford; dear friends, Kenneth and Leona Cole, Michael and Diana Stillwagon, Cathy and Paul Pro, Amber and Benjamin Crawford, Mark and Emilie Gadd, and Christopher and Colleen Spahr; and fur babies, Bruiser, Binxx and Fat Louie. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Dale Knight; grandparents, Doris and Bud Miller; and son, Leslie Paul Pemberton. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, at FRYE FUNERAL HOME INC., 427 W. Main St., Monongahela. Funeral prayers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 2023, in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, Monongahela. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery. The New Eagle Volunteer Fire Department will conduct services at 6 p.m. Sunday, and the Monongahela Donora Area Lions Club will conduct services at 7 p.m., and both will be held in the funeral home.
