Flames engulfed the auditorium of Elizabeth Forward High School early Sunday morning, causing structural damage in areas of the building and smoke damage throughout. Around 5:30 a.m. Sunday, a passing motorist saw smoke rising from the building and notified emergency services. According to Elizabeth Township Police Chief Ken Honick, nearby EMS responders got to the scene around 6 a.m., reporting that large flames leapt through the roof and clouds of smoke covered the building. Honick said they’re still working to identify the cause of the fire. “A preliminary investigation found the origin of the fire may have come from the stage area in the auditorium,” he said. “The fire marshal and ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) are partnering to determine the exact start of the fire.”
