A productive conversation about confronting gun violence was part of the discussion for McKeesport City Council last night.
Mayor Michael Cherepko was the first to bring the subject up during a workshop prior to Wednesday’s regular meeting.
He did so after explaining that — like police departments across Pennsylvania and the United States amid the current social climate as it relates to policing — McKeesport Police Department is having trouble attracting new officers.
“I want to thank Chief (Adam) Alfer and Assistant Chief (Mark) Steele for doing everything they can with the resources they have,” Cherepko said, then looking to the assistant chief. “Just keep up the good work. We know we have a lot of work to do.”
He went on to praise efforts by the McKeesport NAACP Unit to find meaningful solutions to curbing gun violence — especially among young people.
