Gladiators hold off Washington

Basketball is a game of runs, and the South Allegheny boys were on the wrong side of one to end the first half against Washington.
The Gladiators didn’t waver, however, despite a stagnant offense and a couple of starters battling foul trouble. The visitors switched to a 2-3 zone, and that was the catalyst for the second half turnaround.
SA outscored the Prexies 35-24 in the final 16 minutes, as the Gladiators won their fourth straight game to start the season with a 53-46 triumph Tuesday night in non-section action.
“We got into some foul trouble and had a tough time defending their height in the first half,” SA coach Tony DiCenzo said. “So, we needed to switch something and mix it up. I can count on one hand how many times we have played zone the last couple of years. But we switched to the 2-3 and it was effective. We are a man team, so I love how our guys made that adjustment.”
