Douglas C. Wible – Pittsburgh, formerly of Monongahela
Douglas C. Wible, 68, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Monongahela, passed away at home surrounded by family on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022. A son of the late Daniel W. and Eleanor B. Wible, he was born Nov. 12, 1954, in Monongahela, to a family with deep regional roots. Doug graduated from Ringgold High School in the Class of 1972 (he attended his 50th reunion this fall). He graduated from Waynesburg College with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1976 and returned to Monongahela, where he spent the next 30 years helping run his family’s Main Street Maytag store, Wible Appliance, and taking active and enthusiastic part in community life. Local organizations in which Doug held leadership roles included the Chamber of Commerce, the Masonic Lodge, the Mon Valley Ski Club and the Monongahela Area Revitalization Corporation (MARC). Memorably, the Aquatorium’s 40th anniversary celebrations in 2009 saw Doug jump into the river fully dressed, in the role of boat pilot Moat Stanley knocked off by Monongahela Sal. Of course, this was the doing of his aunt, Lorys Jean Crisafulli, who could talk anyone into anything. Over the years, Doug honed his expertise in every possible hobby that required skill and speed. He got his private pilot’s license, water skied on the Mon, won tennis tournaments, skied snowy mountains everywhere, won NASTAR titles at Seven Springs, sailed around the Caribbean and in Moraine State Park, raced his motorcycles on track days, and danced the Lindy Hop and Balboa with precision and flair. It was at a swing dance in Pittsburgh in 2009 that he met Lara and began a new adventure. Doug moved to Pittsburgh as their daughter was born and threw himself with delight into life as a full-time dad, traveling the world with baby Eleanor in a backpack and riding her to preschool in the sidecar of his motorcycle. He taught Eleanor to ski early and fast, and as she grew enjoyed extended family vacations, kayaking at Laurel Hill State Park and matching Lara’s 5k pace without breaking a sweat. They were climbing mountains together up to the end. Doug is survived by wife, Lara Putnam; daughter, Eleanor Wren Putnam Wible; sister, Becky Skoug (Kenneth); niece and nephew, Meganne and Kenneth Skoug IV; aunt, Lorys Jean Wible Crisafulli; cousin, Dan Crisafulli (Greg Vargas); and stepchildren, Miriam (Ronnie Lopez), Gabriel and Alonso Perez-Putnam. Friends will be received at MARSHALL MARRA FUNERAL HOME, 216 Chess St., Monongahela, 724-258-6767, from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022, with a memorial service beginning at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Matthew Stabe officiating. Inurnment will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Ginger Hill. Condolences can be made online at marshallmarrafuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, we suggest donations to the Monongahela Area Historical Society to support renovations to the Longwell House: furthering the latest era of outreach and community pride on the Main Street Doug so cherished. www.mahs-pa.org/donate.
