Jeffrey Alan Curka – Raleigh, N.C.

By obits

Jeffrey Alan Curka, 62, died at his home in Raleigh, N.C., on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022. Jeff was born May 11, 1960, in Pittsburgh, to Frank James Curka Jr. and Anita Jean Roule Curka, both formerly of Monongahela. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Gregory Stephen Curka; paternal grandparents, Frank and Mary Curka; and maternal grandparents, Armedia and Antoinette Roule. Jeff is survived by his sister, Chrisanne Curka Flynn and brother-in-law Joe Flynn, along with his beloved nieces and nephew, Emma, Sara and Joseph, all of Huntersville, N.C. Jeff lived in Pittsburgh, New Jersey and Connecticut in his younger years, and moved with his family to Raleigh in the 1970s. He was a 1978 graduate of Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, and went on to attend North Carolina State University, where he was a member of the rifle team. He graduated in 1982 with a degree in civil engineering. In his career, he worked on nuclear submarines and for the department of transportation. Jeff loved the N.C. State Wolfpack and his adopted hometown of Raleigh. He also never stopped cheering for his true hometown sports teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates. He would never tire of talking sports with anyone who would listen. He had many hobbies, such as fishing, stamp collecting and woodworking, and he was a constant student. Jeff fought hard for more than 20 years against myotonic muscular dystrophy (the disease that also ended his brother’s life in 2007). He struggled daily against the pain, fatigue, weakness and poor eyesight caused by his disease; still he was cheerful and hopeful. To keep hope alive for others who suffer from muscular dystrophy, please consider making a donation in Jeff’s name to the Muscular Dystrophy Association at MDA.org. Friends will be received from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022, at FRYE FUNERAL HOME INC., 427 W. Main St., Monongahela. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon in St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, Monongahela. Inurnment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monongahela. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the family at www.fryefuneralhome.com.
