More than 100 families within the Charleroi Area School District will have all of the fixings for a traditional holiday meal this week.
Through Cougars Care, a volunteer charity initiative through the district, more than $7,000 was raised to supply 119 families with everything they might need to host the perfect holiday meal for their families and loved ones.
Superintendent Dr. Ed Zelich said each year the district provides holiday meals to families in need, but that need doubled in size this year.
The effort began nearly a decade ago, spearheaded by former Superintendent Brad Ferko.
“It was started before my time, so Dr. Ferko needs to have some credit,” Zelich said. “This is my ninth year and we have kept it going.”
On Monday, students from the middle school helped to unload a utility truck of food that was packed into individual boxes.
