John Sowinski – Plum and formerly of Speers

John Sowinski, 94, of Plum and formerly of Speers, passed away on Monday, Nov. 14, 2022, at home. Born in Charleroi on Aug. 29, 1928, he was the son of Anthony and Sophie Koproska Sowinski. John was a Korean War veteran, having served as a sergeant first class in the Army’s 45th Infantry Division. He was retired from the former Corning Glass in Charleroi after 44 years of service. John was Catholic by faith and was a member of the Corning Retirees. He is survived by his daughter, Glenda (Bill) Miller of Plum, with whom he made his home; three grandchildren, Krystal (Mike) Urwin, Jennifer (Kevin) Jones and Jonathan (Sabreena) Miller; four great-grandchildren, Carson, Rory, Robin and Riber; two nieces, Connie Hajduk and Cathy Sharpeta; and a nephew, Peter Katinsky. John was preceded in death by his daughter, Joanne Kuchera; a brother, Edward Sowinski; and his sister, Helen Katinsky. Visitation will be held at Melenyzer Funeral Homes & Cremation Services Inc., 825 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 2022. A blessing will be held in the funeral home at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 2022. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.melenyzer.com.
