With updated, though unofficial, results in Wednesday night, Democrat Josh Shapiro appears to have won election to become Pennsylvania’s next governor by a 14% margin.
By 7 p.m. Wednesday, Shapiro had earned 56% of the vote to state Sen. Doug Mastriano’s 42% — a difference of some 700,000 votes.
Mastriano had not conceded by presstime Wednesday, though Shapiro declared victory late Tuesday night when the margin was slightly smaller than it would be a day later.
In the Mon Valley, Mastriano beat Shapiro in Fayette County 25,947 to 19,822 votes, in Westmoreland County 87,619 to 76,809 votes and in Washington County 46,738 to 44,472 votes — winning those three counties by a total of 19,201 votes.
Shapiro beat Mastriano in Allegheny County 382,510 to 166,763 votes — a difference of 215,747 votes.
Overall, in the four counties that comprise the Mon Valley, Shapiro beat Mastriano by nearly 200,000 votes.
