Two homes were destroyed and several others are damaged in New Eagle after a man accidentally started a fire by burning weeds with a propane torch in his yard and was unable to get it under control with a garden hose.
According to New Eagle Mayor Chas Fine, the first call came in around 3:06 p.m. for a report of a structure fire in the 400 block of Wood Street.
Firefighters from New Eagle, Monongahela, Bentlyville, Donora, Carroll Township, Finleyville, Elrama, Elizabeth Township, Gallatin-Sunnyside and Rostraver No. 1 (Webster) fire departments responded to the call. Once on scene, firefighters found one structure totally engulfed in flames with the fire rapidly spreading to other buildings.
