Tomorrow marks the 79th anniversary of a German submarine firing a torpedo that sank the SS McKeesport Merchant Marine ship.
The city’s namesake is credited with bringing aid to millions of people during World War II and its lifetime at sea.
The SS McKeesport Committee in McKeesport is calling on the public to visit The Palisades on Friday to pay tribute to the Merchant Marine vessel during a noon ceremony. Veterans, military families, local officials and area veterans — including those from McKeesport AMVETS Post 8 — are slated to be a part of the memorial service. Doors at the Palisades are slated to open at 11:45 a.m. at the latest. The event is open to the public, but those wishing to attend should call 412-675-5020 ext. 605 to RSVP.
