It’s Etched in Stone: Barbershop memories: Haircuts, chats and laughs

There is a line from an old song that says, “A shave and a haircut, 2 bits!” Two bits is of course, a quarter! That may have been the price when dad took me to the barbershop for my very first haircuts. I do not remember the name of neither the barber, nor his shop, but it was located on Schoonmaker Avenue near the corner of Oneida Street. Other stores near that corner were Haury’s drugstore and Hyrchik’s grocery store. I don’t know how much money dad paid for those cuts. I do know that as a preteen and able to go to the barbershop on my own, the price was 50 cents, or four bits.
