Gus August, 92, of Monessen, passed away on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, in Hallsworth House, Monessen. He was born on Sept. 30, 1929, in Monessen, the son of the late James and Eftihia Varles August. Gus was a lifelong resident of Monessen, a graduate of Monessen High School, Class of 1947, and a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. He served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Army in the 4th Infantry Medical Company. Gus was a member of American Legion Post 28 and VFW Post 1190, both in Monessen. He retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation’s Monessen plant, and then went on to work at Webster Metals. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mafalda “Muffy” Mancini August. Surviving are his son, James (Pam) August of Du Bois; two daughters, Anna Marie August of Morgantown, W.Va., and Leanne August of Monessen; a sister, Anna Chicolis of Monessen; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC. AND CREMATION SERVICES, 441 Reed Ave., Monessen. Additional viewing will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, 119 St. Spyridon Lane, Monessen, with 10 a.m. the time of the funeral service with Father Meletios Gianniodis officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Monessen. The family kindly asks everyone attending the viewing and funeral service to wear a mask. There will be a Trisagion service at 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Condolences accepted for the family at www.dalfonso-billick.com.
