Sylvia Alvarez Galilei, 85, Monongahela, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021, in her home. She was born Nov. 17, 1935, in Donora, to the late Florentino and Mary Garcia Alvarez. Sylvia graduated from Monongahela High School and attended Robert Morris Business School. She later worked for Equibank and State Farm Insurance for many years. In 1961, she married Alfred Galilei, with whom she celebrated 60 years of marriage this past year. Sylvia was a lifelong member of St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Monongahela, where she was a past member of the Altar and Rosary Society and Christian Mothers. She spent much of her time volunteering at many church events. She enjoyed spending time with her friends, including the monthly card club. She most cherished the time spent with her family, especially during the holidays. In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Cecile Stivala. She is survived by her husband, Alfred; and her children, Michele (Tom) Loftis and David (Christy) Galilei; her grandchildren, Michael (Katie) Loftis, Matthew (Alyssa) Loftis, Maria Loftis and fiancé Connor and Lena Galilei; her sister, Teresa (Larry) Spahr; along with several nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, 722 West Main St., Monongahela. Due to COVID-19, masks are requested inside the church. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Following the funeral service, there will be a luncheon for family and friends at Nemacolin Country Club, 3100 National Pike, Beallsville, PA 15313. If you plan to attend the luncheon after the funeral, please text the number of people that will be attending to 412-908-1841 by noon Sunday, Oct. 24.
