Stephen M. Hlavacik, 74, of York, formerly of North Charleroi, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021, surrounded by his family following illness. He was born in Charleroi-Monessen Hospital, North Charleroi, on Nov. 2, 1946, to Irene and the late Stephen Hlavacik. As the son of a steelworker, Stephen worked in the mill during high school and graduated from Mon Valley Catholic High School in 1964. He subsequently attended Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, graduating with a degree in psychology as part of the infamous Class of 1968. Upon graduation, Stephen relocated to York to begin his career as an educator at York Catholic High School, first as a history teacher and then as a guidance counselor. In the summer, he often worked as an adviser for students at Penn State University, York campus. Stephen also achieved his master’s degree in education at Millersville University to augment his career. He retired from York Catholic in 2011, to relax and enjoy time with his family which he cherished. Stephen is survived by his mother, Irene Emily Veronica Suhan Hlavacik of North Charleroi; his daughters, Kristen Michelle (Shanon) Sweeney of York and Julia Marie Hlavacik of Seattle, Wash.; his former wife, Linda Marie Hlavacik of York; brother, Joseph (Helen) (Annamarie, deceased) Hlavacik of Redding, Calif.; his sisters, Mary Stephanie (Charles, deceased) Matava of Charleroi, Mara Hlavacik (David Howard, deceased) of Bethel Park, and Marci (Eric, deceased) Leech of Peters Township; and numerous nieces and nephews, who thought the world of him. Stephen was, above all, known as a kind person. He was always looking for a pun or a kind word to cheer people up and was a dependable source of support and advice. He loved to watch the news, hold strong opinions about current affairs, and listen to 60s music, and remained an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. He will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, at JOHN W. KEFFER FUNERAL HOME, 2114 W. Market St., York, Pa. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 950 W. Market St., York. Interment will follow in Holy Saviour Cemetery, 3420 N. Susquehanna Trail, York.
