WPIAL looking into Serra Catholic – SA game

After a physical, bitter football game between Serra Catholic and South Allegheny, the WPIAL confirmed Tuesday that they are looking into the conduct of both teams on the field.

A fight in the third quarter stopped the game for a short time, as Serra Catholic’s Paul Pearson and South Allegheny’s Eric Wehrer were ejected from the contest.

Both will miss their team’s next game and could miss the next two games. 

“We are aware of the incident and have been working with the schools and officials to obtain all necessary information,” WPIAL executive director Amy Scheuneman said. 

The game was chippy from the start with talking between both teams occurring during pregame stretches, prior to kickoff and throughout the game.

Serra Catholic was penalized 24 times for a staggering 251 yards. Of those, 11 were personal foul penalties. South Allegheny was penalized 10 times, two of those were off-setting penalties.

“That’s not the way we want to play, undisciplined,” Serra head coach Jose Regus said Saturday after the game. He was steadfast and adamant that his team would face consequences during practice this week.

During the post-game huddle, South Allegheny head coach Frank Cortazzo III commended his team for not backing down to the Eagles and not getting into further altercations.

“That’s one thing I was proud of our players for,” Cortazzo said in his post-game interview. “Things did get ugly there for a second, but we weren’t backing down. They were teeing off on us, though, and we kept getting up.”
