Gloria J. Opatkiewicz, 76, of Monessen, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2021, at Jefferson Hospital. Born May 14, 1945, in Forward Township, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Josephine Krizan Opatkiewicz. After her graduation in 1963 from Elizabeth Forward High School, Gloria earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and then her master’s degree from California University. She loved gardening and worked as a Spanish and English teacher at the Elizabeth Forward High School until her retirement in 2004. Surviving are four sisters, Alexa Pepper of Monongahela, Kathryn (James) Bryan of Coal Center, Dorothy (William) Baccile of Finleyville and Dolores Cubra of Glassport; a brother, John Opatkiewicz of Forward Township; her longtime friend, Timothy Lee Landy of Mt. Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her sister, Caroline Bernardo. Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at MARSHALL MARRA FUNERAL HOME, 216 Chess St., Monongahela, 724-258-6767, marshallmarrafuneralhome.com, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Alan Petke officiating. Interment will follow in Round Hill Cemetery, Elizabeth Township. At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, make a donation in Gloria’s name to the Wounded Warriors via woundedwarriorproject.org.
