Work at Mounds Park may resume soon

Monongahela residents and children looking forward to using the newly renovated Mounds Park may soon get their wish.

After a long delay with paperwork put the park’s completion on hiatus, Councilman Rusty Polonoli announced at Monday’s work session that the project should resume during the final week of August.

Work at the playground has been dormant for three months as it waits for new equipment to be installed.

On Monday, Polonoli said he recently received a phone call from a contractor who looked to schedule a date to have mulch put into the park. Polonoli said even though he had to tell the caller to speak with someone else, he’s optimistic it means contractors have their eyes set on working on the park again.

“That was a good sign for me,” said Polonoli, who has spearheaded the project over the past two years.

The park was originally slated to open in May, but the completion date has been up in the air due to paperwork and contract delays.

In June, Polonoli said he was alerted by the Washington County Redevelopment Authority that the park’s contractor, an employee of playground equipment supplier GameTime, didn’t have enough insurance liability coverage required to start the project.

Once the contractor’s insurance coverage was corrected, it took additional weeks for the county to submit the order to the contractor.
