MARC 5K Run/Walk: Kids challenged to ‘Beat the Chief’

This Saturday, kids under 18 will have a chance to beat a cop.
And get some free ice cream in the process.
Saturday’s Monongahela Area Revitalization Corporation’s fourth annual “On Your MARC Cox Market the Best Yet 5K Run/Walk” will feature the “Beat the Chief” challenge.
Any child who beats Monongahela police Chief Kevin Harris’ time at the MARC 5K Run/Walk will receive an ice cream sandwich from Sweets by Mrs. C and an “I Beat The Chief” T-shirt.
This is the first year for the challenge, and Harris said the idea came to him as a chance to bring attention to MARC, Monongahela businesses and have fun with kids all at the same time.
“It was a discussion that came up with doing something with getting kids involved and doing something to get them running and get exercise,” Harris said.
With ice cream treats — and bragging rights — at stake, is Harris confident in his running abilities?
“I’m confident that the kids are going to enjoy the event and enjoy the ice cream,” Harris said. “I’m sure they’ll have plenty of things to let me know about. I’m excited to be there.”
Runners for the MARC 5K Walk/Run will begin at 8 a.m. and walkers will begin at 8:02 a.m. The event starts and finishes at the Noble J. Dick Aquatorium and will wind through the neighborhoods of Monongahela and New Eagle.
A $25 registration fee will be accepted at the race site until 7:30 a.m. the morning of the race.
Race applications can be found locally at Cox Market at 711 Route 481, Sparkles by Shell at 246 West Main St., and at the Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce at 208 West Main St. Online registration is at www.runsignup.com.
