The sixth annual Road to Trail 5K, the largest fundraising event held each year by the Serra Catholic cross country program, will have a little twist to it.
Instead of being held early in the morning at White Oak Park, the event will take place 7 p.m. Friday.
“We were originally going to have it on Aug. 14, but the park was booked up for that date,” Serra Catholic cross country coach Brian Dzurenda said. “I think having it at night will definitely add some excitement for the event.”
The COVID-19 pandemic and local safety regulations prompted Dzurenda and planners of the event to limit participation to 50 runners with separate men and women races taking place.
This year, there will be no limitations on how many runners can participate.
Dzurenda said 80 have already pre-registered, while he anticipates about 50 to 60 will register in the coming days.
Online registration is available until today. On-site registration can be done for a $30 fee on the day of the race.
“It’s nice that we can have everyone there without having to wear masks before and after the races, and without having to put things down on the ground to make sure people are 6 feet apart,” Dzurenda said. “We will still have hand sanitizing stations and make sure everyone is safe.”
Funds raised through the 5K event will benefit the cross country athletes at Serra Catholic. Last year, a portion of the funds were used to get the runners new uniforms for the first time since the program’s inception, Dzurenda said.
