Throughout play in the Mon Valley Independent Summer Basketball League’s girls division this season, Monessen Florist has seldom played with its full roster.

But as the year has progressed and the deck has progressively gotten fuller, Monessen Florist has slowly rounded into form.

Wednesday’s game against Lee Supply was the latest example of that upward trajectory, as Monessen Florist took them down, 56-51, to clinch a playoff berth at Marx’s Court Time Sports Center.

Monessen Florist improved their record to 3-7, while Lee Supply dropped to 1-8.

“I think now that we’ve had them play a few games together, they’re meshing well and figuring out how to play with each other,” Monessen Florist co-coach Mia Woytovich said.

A fuller roster has afforded Monessen Florist more options, not just in people to play, but also in coaching strategies.

Knowing that Lee Supply was down to just six players on Wednesday, Monessen Florist opted to full-court press and also substitute players aggressively, using fresh legs to wear Lee Supply down.

“We decided to full-court press the entire game, and I think that because Lee Supply was down players, it turned out to be a great decision because they were tired toward the end,” Woytovich said. “We had a couple turnovers on them that went in our favor.”
