Time is ticking to prepare an entry for this year’s Anything that Floats race being held Saturday as part of the Elizabeth Borough Volunteer Fire Company’s Riverfest.
The first rule of the contest is to be safe and have fun. After that, other than not using an actual boat, most anything goes. Event organizer Jeremy Rager is hoping this year will attract the most entrants ever for the event that started six years ago.
“The most we’ve ever had was five. Hopefully this year people want to get outside. Maybe we’ll get more,” Rager said.
He’s encouraging Boy Scouts, baseball teams and other fire departments to jump on board for the friendly competition.
“It would be nice to get people out to do it,” Rager said. “I’m trying to get local boat clubs involved.”
Rager said safety is the top concern, and everyone is required to wear an approved life jacket.
“We had to cancel one year because of high water,” he said.
Last year’s event, as well as the Riverfest itself, were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
All the crafts must be homemade and no motors are permitted. Sail or pedal-power is acceptable, according to the rules. Participants must remain in their boats and are not permitted to swim alongside the boats. Imagination is encouraged.
