A Belle Vernon woman has been named the substitute interim superintendent for the Belle Vernon Area School District following the unexpected resignation of the man who had held the position for less than two weeks.
The Belle Vernon Area School Board announced Thursday afternoon that Jeanine Gregory has accepted the temporary position. She retired in July 2016 as superintendent for the South Park School District.
The Belle Vernon Area School Board held a virtual executive session Wednesday night to discuss the unexpected resignation of George Lammay and to select a replacement to see the district through until a permanent superintendent can be hired. Dr. Michelle Dowell, who had been the district superintendent, is on leave until her official resignation Aug. 13.
Gregory has a long history with the Belle Vernon Area School District, both as a resident and as an employee. She worked in the district for 26 years, including 20 years as a reading specialist.
“Jeanine Gregory has always had the school district at heart,” School Director Joe Grata said. “She and her family live here, she knows the players, she has grandchildren in our schools and she is well qualified to be acting superintendent under what are very challenging circumstances.
“I have only asked fellow directors that we not ‘throw her under the bus,’ as we have with several others who have left BVA or changed positions.”
