Washington County residents may soon have a say in how county government is run.
County commissioners announced Thursday they will hold a virtual meeting July 23 to vote on a resolution to place the formation of a county government study in the hands of voters.
If approved by commissioners, the resolution will be on November’s general election ballot and will ask voters if they would like to see the formation of a citizens committee to study county government and how it operates. Voters will also have the opportunity to vote for the citizens who will make up the committee.
If approved by voters, the 11-person commission will study term limits, salaries, how to save taxpayer money and how to make Washington County government more efficient.
The resolution was brought to the table at Wednesday’s commissioners meeting.
“It’s something I’ve been percolating around for the past four or five years,” Maggi said. “We’ve studied other areas like human services, correctional facilities and radio facilities, but what about us?
“We became a government in 1781 and nothing has changed with the way our government runs. But a lot has changed in 230 years.”
