Dax Thomas State Farm was handed its first loss of the Mon Valley Independent Summer Basketball League season after dropping a 55-47 decision to defending champion AMD Industries in the opening game of play at Marx’s Court Time Sports Center Monday.

AMD Industries used a late first-half run to take a slim lead at the half before starting off the second half with an 8-0 run to put just enough distance between the two teams on the scoreboard.

“We’re missing a few players due to the AAU tournaments, but the girls that were here really stepped up for us tonight,” AMD head coach Bria Rathway said. “Taking a week off, you could see it a little bit early on but these girls have played a lot of basketball.”

AMD Industries (2-1) played without leading scorer Eden Williamson, Bailie Brinson and Tasya Troxler-Scott.

“Anytime you can get a win without one of the best players in the league in the lineup, that’s a win you’ll take every time. The girls did a great job battling out there,” Rathway said.

Seton LaSalle sophomore Mallory Daly led the way for the defending champions, scoring a game-high 21 points with 13 coming in the second half. Gateway’s Marina Grado made her season debut for AMD and finished with 12 points.

“I was really impressed with Marina and how she played in her first game in the league,” Rathway said. “Her defense was intense and I think the girls really fed off of that. I’m really excited to see how she continues on the rest of the season.”
