Charleroi welcomes return of Little Great Race

A long-standing tradition for area walkers and runners will return after being canceled last year due to COVID-19.

For the previous 34 years, on the first Saturday after Labor Day, hundreds of runners and walkers journeyed to the Magic City for the Little Great Race.

At 8 a.m. rain or shine, hundreds glided along McKean and Fallowfield avenues and finished near the Mon River in Trustees Park.

Thanks to cfsbank, the race will return this year on Sept. 11. John C. Gill, cfsbank president & CEO, said the company is happy to sponsor the return of the race.

“We are proud to do our part by sponsoring the return of the Little Great Race,” Gill said. “The pandemic disrupted so much in our lives and Main Street communities.

“Events like the Little Great Race, which are an important part of our local traditions, just couldn’t be held last year. We are so excited for the race’s return and are committed to its continued success.”

Charleroi Borough Council President Mark Alterici said the race provides an exciting morning in Charleroi each year.

“The race is a community asset. Over the years, thousands have come to Charleroi for this race,” Alterici said. “They see old friends, share a few laughs, eat some good food and support a worthy cause. We can’t thank Mr. Gill and cfsbank enough for their commitment to our community and the race.”
