It’s a rite of summer here in western Pennsylvania — a trip to Kennywood.

Monongahela residents will have a chance to enjoy the beloved amusement park and help raise funds for the Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce when the chamber hosts its annual Community Day at Kennywood Aug. 4.

Tickets for the rain-or-shine event go on sale today.

Tickets can be purchased at Charleroi Federal Savings, 1220 W. Main St., Cox IGA Market, Rabe’s Trading Post, Sparkles by Shell, Sweets by Mrs. C, the Monongahela Area Chamber of Commerce Office and Monongahela Foodland. Tickets will remain on sale until the afternoon of Aug. 4.

Chamber Vice President Michelle DeHosse, who also owns Sparkles by Shell, said this year’s event will be the 118th time Monongahela holds its Community Day at Kennywood.

“When I was younger, everybody would bring their food and sit in the pavilions,” DeHosse said of the event. “It’s a big reunion for people from Monongahela. I see a lot of people that I haven’t seen in a while. The one time during the year a lot of people go to Kennywood, it’s on Monongahela’s Community Day.”

The event was held last year during the COVID-19 pandemic, albeit with numerous restrictions and guidelines from the park that resulted in low attendance numbers.

DeHosse said less than 20 tickets were sold last year for an event that usually sees more than 500 participants.
