Bria Rathway appeared as if she didn’t know how to feel at times Tuesday evening.
The AMD Industries coach watched her team frequently display dominance on the offensive boards, thus developing crucial second-chance opportunities and drawing key fouls.
That in itself pleased Rathway.
The constant missed foul shots that followed did not.
“I had mixed emotions because they’re getting so many offensive boards by crashing the boards and being physical, which is amazing. I love that,” Rathway said. “They do all the hard work and then they get to the free throw line. That part should be easy. I just kept telling them to relax up there. It’s all about fundamentals.”
Despite a 10 for 33 showing from the charity stripe, the defending Mon Valley Independent Summer Basketball League girls division champions still found a way to win.
AMD began its title defense by capturing a 51-41 victory over Monessen Florist on opening night at Marx’s Court Time Sports Center.
The game was a rematch of last summer’s championship game.
“Tonight was the first time some of these girls met one another and played with one another,” Rathway said. “I wanted them to control what they could control, hustle and show positive body language. I knew the shots were going to fall, I was just so happy with how well everyone meshed together.”
