North Charleroi leaders have agreed to attempt to service the borough’s only dump truck before making a decision, and committing a chunk of change, to purchase a new vehicle.
The 2007 Ford has been parked since last month’s meeting when an issue regarding its brakes was brought up, causing a safety concern for street crew members and the public.
Since then, the borough’s street crew has been operating with a pick-up truck that was purchased two years ago but is not always capable of handling bigger jobs.
The dump truck was recently looked over free of charge by Grillo’s Automotive Service in North Charleroi, which reported that it appears to be in good shape.
Before deciding to spend money on a new vehicle, council has agreed to have a new emergency clutch brake installed for about $300.
Councilman Fred Schwalb asked if the entire brake system could be checked to avoid any hiccups.
“We need this truck,” he said. “I need this to do what we need to do, and I’d like to have the whole system gone over to be on the safe side and make sure there are no issues or other problems. We don’t want there to be a safety issue for our guys or the public. So let’s have it looked over, and then we will take it from there.”
