Area libraries benefit from WCCF grants

Local libraries received a boost recently when the Washington County Community Foundation awarded $221,500 in grants to public libraries from its Community CARE Fund.

The grants will support staffing, facility improvements, equipment and furniture purchases and technology and program enhancements.

The grant money was distributed among 14 Washington County libraries. In the Mon Valley, the Charleroi Area Public Library received $25,000, the Donora Public Library received $25,000 and the Monongahela Public Library received $24,500.

Donora Public Library Director Mark Bizzell Boyer said the grant will be used to install automatic doors to improve handicap access to the library as well as install no-touch fixtures in the restrooms, a feature the library has wanted since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the area last year.

“During COVID, a lot of public buildings went with no-touch fixtures,” he said. “I’m gathering bids and quotes right now, and hopefully everything will get done as soon as possible. The WCCF has been a great financial partner for us for the past several years.”
