It took 10 innings, but Belle Vernon outlasted Charleroi, 3-2, in Legion play Thursday at the DiVirgilio Sports Complex.
Belle Vernon (2-1) catcher Danny Olbrys delivered an RBI single with the bases loaded to score Aidan Ochs to win the game in the home half of the 10th.
The game was scoreless through seven as both starting pitchers were holding their opposition at bay.
Ashton Ray went seven scoreless innings allowing six hits while fanning eight for Charleroi (2-1). Donovan Von Fradenburgh did not allow a run in six innings of work, allowing six hits, five walks and striking out three.
“Our pitching was awesome, Donovan and Zack (Kutek) came in and did well,” BV assistant coach Jake Hartman said. “They wanted to win, they wanted that one for my dad (Tom Hartman) and they got it for him.”
